SUMMARY:Chairman Speech for Opening Ceremony of Sesiu sa Tšoele le beta Poho
DESCRIPTION:By Ntate Sam Matekane \nRight Honourable Prime Minister\, Honourable Minister of Health\, representatives of the supportive NGO community\, fellow business leaders of Lesotho’s private sector\, distinguished guests\, ladies and gentlemen. It is with great honour\, that I stand here today\, to welcome you to the launch of Lesotho’s private sector initiative to augment our national covid-19 vaccine response plan. Duly named Sesiu sa Tšoele le beta Poho. \nAs the name alludes to\, the fund signifies the coming togetherness of both government and the private sector to beat this erroneous bull that is Covid-19 which has attacked our country. It has affected us in all aspects\, our health and our economy that has seen devastating repercussion that we’ve seen play out over the past 12 months to date. \nWhen the pandemic first hit requiring national lockdowns world over\, including ours last year April. We had luck on our side\, the first wave was merciful on us. However our second wave hit much harder than its first. Christmas is meant to be a time of joy\, a time to spend time with loved ones and friends. Unfortunately for Covid-19 it was a recipe for an exponentially high transmission event. Added to that the advent of the new regional strain 501.V2 strain. This strain was and is evident to have a 50-70% more infectious rate than its precursor. We saw an overbearing increase in hospital and clinical occupancy rates\, a shortages of oxygen\, beds\, medical staff and resources in general. January seemed to be a never ending period of weekly phone calls\, news of relatives\, friends\, and colleagues passing away. If you have not been directly affected you are aware of somebody who was and continuous to be. \nThis has led us to our second hard lockdown\, without a doubt\, necessary\, proving effective as a circuit breaker by allowing health facilities to reduce hospitalization rates\, enable time for contact tracing\, and the beefing up of health centers. \nAs time has gone by\, it is evident that Covid-19 isn’t a pandemic that will end quickly\, and it is a pandemic that requires the collaboration\, a unification of both Lesotho’s public and private entities such as ourselves to fight this bull. \nWithout it we will continue to see loss of life\, loss of those we know\, a serious impact on the Lesotho economy and our livelihoods\, with potential third\, forth and fifth waves. But we have a solution at hand\, vaccines. Thanks to the efforts of Ministry of Health\, UNICEF\, and Lesotho’s key development partners we have seen this month\, the delivery of our first batch of Astra Zeneca vaccine\, and the first inoculations as of 10 th March. We would like to give praise to all whom are involved for their hard work in getting us to this point. \nYou are not alone\, private sector is here to help. We have pledged as a fund objective\, to assist to procure and distribute vaccines to 560\,000 of our population as part of Ministry of Health’s covid-19 vaccine process with a fund target of LSL 100 million. Sesiu sa Tšoele le beta Poho\, in partnership with VXPASS is also proud to announce that we will be partaking in a global lead in using blockchain technology as a form of a digital vaccine verification system. VXPASS a tokenized blockchain innovation\, will be assisting the private sector in ensuring the capture\, monitor and dissemination of information related to the vaccination process. All as a purpose to expedite the national inoculation plan. Doing so is key\, key in reopening the economy and having. Lesotho open for business\, seeing our lives and livelihoods return to some sense of normalcy. \nLesotho\, cannot afford anymore hard lockdowns\, as government\, as businesses\, as people who live in this nation\, we all can’t afford another hard lockdown and so as private sector we are acting now\, we are collaborating now\, and in our partnership\, Government of Lesotho and Sesiu sa Tšoele le beta Poho will fight to bring Lesotho to a new normal
